Day 4 Chalus to La Coquille - 17.5km

This was our first proper days walk. It absolutely poured down through beautiful countryside, a path around fishing lakes. Somehow the experience was spoiled by the pouring rain, then very muddy rutted paths. Lunch was under a tree whilst it continued to rain. We arrived at La Coquille expecting the name to live up to itself and offer us a warm welcome. The refuge had a big notice on declaring it to be closed until 1st April! Our book said it opened on 15th March. Jenny rang the only hotel in town, The Voyager, a Relais hotel. Posh with no facilities for drying wet stuff. Our five Belgian ladies that we met at Challus joined us ----- but no food in town to be had anywhere. It was Sunday. We were sent to an English owned bar - John and Joanne. They were just closing and they had a big black dog that kept barking at us aggressively. We left in a hurry. So the Belgian ladies Monique, Jacqueline, Annie, Agnes and another Monique drove us all back to Daves at Challus. Good old Dave fed us Pizza, chips and salad. We were absolutely starving! Returned to La Coquille to sleep and left the next day. La Coquille will be remembered for barking dogs and no food. Mo

Lawrence of Arabia stayed in Chalus

Donkey on route - wish we could take him to carry our load!
