The road westwards from Astoga goes through a broke terrain, with trees and bushes and mountain ridges in the horizon. The Maragateria is described as the ‘wildest and most beautiful areas along the route. The climate is described as possibly being extremely cold even in summer.
The refuge at Rabanal is called Refugio Gaucelmo and has 30 beds. High standard, modern, spacious. 20.4km

Portela de Valcarce to Hospital de la Condesa

From here the path climbs uphill along wooed hillsides and green hedges towards O Cebreiro across the border into Galicia. O Cebreiro is 14 km from Portela on the road to Hospital de la Condesa. Could stop here instead as it has a refuge for 80. If we did that it would be another 30km to Samos. This area is subject to sudden and heavy thunderstorms 20,2km
